Sancerre, a promontory of stone and vine
Perched 312 metres high, Sancerre overlooks the Loire and surrounding vineyards. The old town’s cobbled streets come alive around Place de la Halle, and the Porte-César viewpoint offers a sweeping panorama. You taste white Sancerre, crisp and mineral, or the delicate red. In nearby Chavignol, the AOP crottin cheese can still be enjoyed warm. A date of very genuine, rural sincerity.
The Loire by Bike and Apremont-sur-Allier
The Loire by Bike route crosses the department between Sancerre and Pouilly. Riding along the royal river, you pass sandy beaches, anglers and guinguettes. In the south, Apremont-sur-Allier is listed among France’s Most Beautiful Villages: its warm-stone houses and flowered gardens on the Allier form an enchanting pause to rediscover together.
Aubigny-sur-Nère, city of the Stuarts
In the north, Aubigny-sur-Nère still bears traces of the Franco-Scottish Auld Alliance: the town long belonged to the Stuarts. July’s Franco-Scottish festivals bring out kilts, bagpipes and dances beneath the half-timbered houses. On Lyad, members from the Cher share their favourite cellars and villages; it is up to you to find someone to clink glasses with.
